The South Coast Research & Extension Center (South Coast REC) is accepting proposals for new and continuing research and extension projects for the project year of July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018.
Located on 200 acres in Orange County, South Coast REC research and extension projects and programs focus on a variety of agriculture and natural resource topics including: variety development, crop and landscape pest management, repository for germplasm collections (citrus, avocado, persimmon, and cherimoya), irrigation management, plant nutrition, and long-term impacts of changing rainfall patterns on native ecosystems. As reclaimed water is the main irrigation source provided to the Center by the local water district, researchers have the opportunity to assist in the development of management strategies for the use of a water source that will become increasingly more important to the long-term sustainability of agriculture and urban
The Center provides labor, equipment, research facilities, and technical and management support at a reduced recharge rate to UC academics. However, due to increasing costs this reduced rate will be increasing incrementally over the next 3-4 year. We are anticipating an increase to $30/hr. for the 2017-2018 project year. Fortunately we have been able to include a significant portion of our increasing water costs into the new rate. This means you will only be billed for irrigation water exceeding a baseline allocation based on ETo at CIMIS #75. We have run a number of scenarios based on historic water use by researchers and it appears that unless a research project exceeds water use beyond 100% of ETo, the $30/hr. recharge rate will include all or most of your water use. This means in 2017-2018 research costs for most research at South Coast REC will not change significantly as previously research was charged for recharge hours plus directly charged for all irrigation.
Proposals for non-UC organizations will be considered if resources are available but the full cost rate will be charged. Please contact South Coast REC's business office at (949) 653-1812 for full cost rate.
Proposals may be submitted into the REC Manage System via the South Coast REC Website (screc.ucanr.edu/Research/Submitting_a_Proposal), final submission date for the 2017-2018 project year is May 5, 2017.
The Center’s Research Advisory Committee will evaluate the proposed research and extension for scientific merit and regional appropriateness. Researchers will be notified by email.
